What to do after get engaged

You have found your soulmate and you are hopefully feeling excited beyond any feeling you’ve ever felt. That’s so wonderful! This feeling doesn’t come around very often so enjoy every single sweet moment of it!

While you are snapping selfies and sharing the news, there are probably a million thoughts running through your head. When will the wedding be? Which venue will you choose for your dream ceremony and reception? Who will be in your bridal party? What will you wear? What will they wear? Food? Drink? Honeymoon. The list might seem endless.

Depending on your budget and time frame, the list could actually be endless. There is always more you can do and more you can buy. However, before you get caught up in all that, there are 4 things newly engaged couples should do as soon as possible to make the entire process easier, less stressful and, most importantly, more enjoyable.

  1. RELAX.

We know, easier said than done. But this is a marathon, not a sprint. (Unless you are looking to get married right away! If so, skip to No. 5 on this list NOW.

The best ways to actually relax are to make sure you carve out alone time away from family and celebrations. Stay in touch with each other and enjoy the hoopla together. Ladies, get a manicure. You’ll be showing off that ring for a while and you want your hands to look their best. Both of you can enjoy a massage, alone or side by side. Do anything possible to remain physically relaxed because there will be a lot coming at you fast.

  1. PROTECT your ring.

At this very moment, when you are high on life, one of the only things that could derail your happiness is if something happens to the precious ring. This isn’t a romantic task, but certainly a necessary one. Imagine, for just one moment, if you looked down at your hand and the stone wasn’t there. Horrific thought, right?

Therefore, do two things right away: Get the ring sized so it fits properly. Second, prevent heartache by purchasing insurance for the ring immediately. Google some jewelry insurance companies and get some quotes. Also, check with your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance because you may be able to add ring coverage quite inexpensively.

  1. Discuss Timing

You have likely already thought about whether or not you are going to have a longer or shorter engagement. If you have a month, or even a specific date, in mind, you will need to begin thinking about the “when” as soon as possible. Talk to the important people in your life (think: maid of honor/best man, parents, etc.) and find out if there are any conflicts timewise. If either of you have jobs that require you to be on call during a specific season (accountant in the first quarter of the year or retail employee around the holidays, as examples), you’ll want to avoid those months.

Remember that the most desirable dates get booked quickly: Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve and long holiday weekends.

Just start thinking about your timing so when you get to venue-shopping you’ll have a plan of action in mind.

  1. Research Wedding Locations

Many people have imagined their wedding day more than once or twice in their lives. It’s got to be perfect! The wedding venue you select will go a long way to making your wedding day your dream day. Do you want an outside or indoor ceremony? Are you thinking waterfront or park-like setting? Or, are you feeling more traditional and want to go with a house of worship for the ceremony and a ballroom for the reception?
